Baldwin NY Yellow Pages

Baldwin is a hamlet in the town of Hempstead in Nassau County. The first residents of Baldwin were Native Americans known as Merrick part of the Algonquian tribe that called two villages home along Milburn Creek in the South Shore area of Long Island. Two early settlers, John Hicks from Flushing and John Spragg from England came to the area in 1643 at which time it became known as Hick’s Neck. The pair extended the area south to the salt meadows. In 1686, John Pine built the first grist mill on Milburn Creek which brought in more settlers with an array of trades including marshing, raising longwood, raising sheep, farming, and fishing. Sometime between the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, the area became known as Milburn. From this time forward the village began to grow with the first churches built in 1810 and the first school in 1833. The school district is Baldwin Union Free School District which offers 7 elementary schools, 1 junior high school, and 1 high school. There is also 1 Catholic school in Baldwin, St. Christopher established in 1925. The most popular attraction in Baldwin is the Baldwin Harbor Park which offers a skate park, roller rink, bike paths, playground, and athletic fields. Another popular attraction is the Baldwin Historical Society and Museum. Baldwin is ranked at the 25th best place to live in the US as reported by Money Magazine 2007.
